Under the law, the concept of "food supplement" benefits from a precise definition, provided by the European Parliament in its 2002/46/CE directive of 2002.
Thus, a food supplement is understood as "foodstuffs the purpose of which is to supplement the normal diet and which are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, alone or in combination, marketed in dose form [...]".
Ultimately, this legal definition is quite close to the intuitive meaning of the term: a food supplement is therefore a product made up of various nutrients and substances intended to supplement the diet (not replace it!), particularly to prevent deficiencies.
